Maven Trading News Trading: The 2-Minute Rule Traders Often Miss

Maven Trading News Trading

Maven Trading allows news trading in its current evaluation structure, but there is one detail that can completely change how you interpret that statement:

Maven restricts trade execution from 2 minutes before until 2 minutes after red-folder news events.

And the rule is broader than simply saying:

"Don't open a trade around news."

Maven says the window also covers trades that are closed by Take Profit, profit-target automation or other execution during the restricted period.

It can even affect a trade that was opened well before the announcement if it generates profit during the restricted window.

That is the part traders need to understand.

Can you news trade with Maven?

Yes, but not during the restricted window on the standard accounts.

Maven's current FAQ states that traders cannot open or close trades within 2 minutes either side of a red-folder news release.

That means:

2 minutes before

through

2 minutes after

the release.

Maven also makes a distinction for its instant accounts, where this particular news rule does not apply.

So right away, the question becomes:

Which Maven account are you using?

The simple Maven news rule

Suppose CPI is scheduled for 8:30.

The restricted window runs from:

8:28

through

8:32.

During that period, Maven says traders cannot open or close trades.

That includes a trade hitting TP.

It also includes a trade reaching the profit target.

And because Maven uses automatic account management in some situations, a position being automatically closed during that time can still count as a news-rule violation.

This is a much more important rule than the phrase "news trading restricted" makes it sound.

The surprising part: you can open before the news and still have a problem

Imagine NFP is scheduled for 8:30.

You open EURUSD at 8:00.

Your trade is completely outside the restricted window when you enter.

At 8:30, NFP is released.

At 8:31, your Take Profit is hit.

You might naturally think:

"I didn't trade the news. I opened half an hour earlier."

But Maven's current FAQ explicitly says the restriction includes trades opened before the event that hit TP or generate profit during the restricted window.

That is one of the biggest details for an existing-position trader to understand.

The rule is not only about when you open.

It can also be about when the trade closes or generates profit.

What happens if the trade is automatically closed?

Maven says it has an auto-close feature that closes trades when a target is reached.

If that closure happens during a restricted news period, Maven says it is still considered a violation of the 2-minute rule, whether or not a normal Take Profit order was manually set.

That matters because a trader could accidentally violate the rule without manually clicking anything at the exact moment of the news.

The account can still close the position.

The timing of that closure still matters.

What counts as red-folder news?

Maven states that red-folder news events on Forex Factory are used for the news restriction.

That includes major events such as:

CPI

FOMC

Non-Farm Employment Change

Maven also gives separate affected-instrument rules.

For example, all instruments are affected by certain major USD announcements such as CPI, FOMC and NFP.

Gold and silver have a broader list of relevant high-impact events involving USD, AUD and CAD, as well as other interest-rate, inflation and growth events.

This is especially relevant if you trade XAUUSD.

What about gold during CPI?

Suppose you are long gold before CPI.

CPI comes out.

Gold jumps.

Your Take Profit is reached one minute later.

That is exactly the sort of situation where a trader needs to understand Maven's current wording.

The position may have been opened long before the event.

But if it generates profit during the restricted two-minute period, Maven says that can be treated as a violation.

This is why a trader should not reduce the rule to:

"Don't enter during news."

That is incomplete.

But there is another layer: Maven's gambling rules

Maven does not only care about the timing of news.

It also has rules against trading behaviour it considers gambling rather than genuine trading.

Its current FAQ describes "all-in" behaviour, oversized single bets and attempts to pass a challenge through one high-risk position as prohibited.

Its terms also identify certain news-driven strategies as prohibited where they violate the firm's trading parameters.

That means:

"I can't trade during the news window"

is not the only risk.

Even outside the restricted window, an account can still have broader risk-management issues.

Why this matters for NFP

Imagine your normal trades risk 0.25%.

NFP is approaching.

You suddenly decide to risk 3% because:

"This is the one trade that will pass the account."

That is a very different trading profile.

Maven explicitly addresses this kind of all-or-nothing behaviour.

The firm is looking for trading behaviour that resembles a genuine strategy rather than a one-shot bet.

That makes the news discussion much more useful than simply publishing a five-minute countdown rule.

Now comes the question the prop firm can't answer

Suppose you survive all the rules.

NFP hits.

EURUSD falls.

Why?

You know the calendar event.

But that does not automatically explain the move.

You still want to investigate:

Was payroll growth stronger than expected?

Did unemployment change?

What happened to wages?

Did Treasury yields move?

Did the dollar strengthen?

Did the market reprice the expected path of Fed policy?

Did the first EURUSD move continue?

Did it reverse?

Gold gives you even more to investigate

Suppose CPI causes XAUUSD to rise sharply.

The simplest explanation is:

"Inflation came in softer."

But a trader who actually wants to understand the move should ask:

What happened to the dollar?

What happened to yields?

What happened to real yields?

Was the reaction already priced in?

Did gold continue higher?

Did silver confirm it?

Did the move reverse?

This is where Echelon fits

Maven tells you what is permitted.

Echelon can help investigate what happened.

You can start with the actual candle and then inspect the surrounding fundamental context.

The question becomes:

Why did this move happen at this exact moment?

Relevant headlines.

Related market movement.

Fundamental developments.

Cross-market context.

That is useful because a technical trader already knows how to look at a chart.

The missing information is often what happened around the chart.

A practical Maven news workflow

Before the release

Check Forex Factory for red-folder events.

Know the two-minute window

Do not just remember the release time.

Mark the entire restricted period.

Check your open positions

A trade opened before the release can still be affected if it generates profit during the restricted window.

Think about automated exits

Do not assume an automatic closure is exempt.

Maven explicitly addresses auto-closed trades.

Know whether you have an instant account

The current news restriction does not apply to Maven's instant accounts.

Then investigate the move

The news event is just the timestamp.

The real research is figuring out what the market did with the information.

FAQ

Can you trade news with Maven Trading?

On Maven's standard accounts, traders cannot open or close trades within 2 minutes before or after red-folder news. The rule does not apply to Maven's instant accounts.

Can I hold a trade through NFP with Maven?

A position can be open before the news, but Maven says that if it hits TP, profit target or otherwise generates profit during the restricted window, it can be treated as a violation.

What is Maven's news trading window?

The current restriction runs from 2 minutes before a red-folder event until 2 minutes after it.

Does Maven use Forex Factory for news?

Yes. Maven states that red-folder events on Forex Factory determine the news restriction.

Can I news trade with a Maven instant account?

Maven states that the standard news rule does not apply to its instant accounts.

Can I pass a Maven challenge with one huge news trade?

Maven's current rules prohibit all-in and gambling-style behaviour, including using oversized single bets to try to pass or fail the challenge.

Final thoughts

Maven's news policy is more nuanced than:

"News trading is banned."

The actual rule is:

2 minutes before and after red-folder news is restricted.

But the rule can affect existing trades, TP hits and automated closures.

That is the detail many traders will not realise until they actually read the firm's rules.

And once you have worked out when you can trade, the much more useful question remains:

What actually caused the move?

That is where the economic calendar becomes the beginning of the investigation.
